The Indian Association of Tulane U. is hosting CultureSHOCK this Saturday in the LBC! It's an amazing opportunity to check out some awesome Indian music and food, and to learn about the IATU events taking place on campus this year! Go international without ever leaving campus!

Attend the first Latin American Cinema Series:

When: October 1st and 2nd

Where: The Broad Theater, 636 North Broad, New Orleans

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Stone Center for Latin American Studies is collaborating with The Broad Theater to present the 1st Annual Latin America Cinema Series. The series will showcase a wide variety of shorts and features from Haiti, Cuba, Argentina, Guatemala, Peru, Mexico and Colombia. Titles include such film festival standouts such as THE APOSTATE, Martin Sheen’s latest film THE VESSEL, and IXCANUL, the first Guatemalan film shot in the Kaqchikel Maya language.

This film series is presented in partnership with WWNO and the Cine Institute in Jacmel, Haiti. All proceeds from the Haitian series will go to Cine Institute.

Global Connections Presentations, Pecha Kucha Style

In honor of International Education Week  we are holding this special event (during our Global Cafe) to give internationally-minded students the opportunity to share their stories with the Tulane community.   The theme will be “Global Connections”, and students returning from study abroad will describe highlights from their experience and members of the international community will be sharing their stories of adapting to the States, stories from home, and highlights from their research and work here at Tulane.

What is Pecha Kucha?

Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of “chit chat”, it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. It’s a format that makes presentations concise and keeps things moving at a rapid pace. For more information, visit www.pechakucha.org.

A Year in the Life of a Study Abroad Applicant, Part I: Introductions!

Hi Tulane! 

Welcome to our weekly feature, A Year in the Life of a Study Abroad Applicant! This fall, we have partnered with a Tulane sophomore who will be applying to one of the Office of Study Abroad international programs for her junior year! She has agreed to give everyone on campus this insider view of what it's like to search for the right study abroad program and go through the application process! We are so excited to have her sharing her experiences with you! Take it away, Emily!

My name is Emily Bonenfant and I am a sophomore from Hampton, New Hampshire majoring in Environmental Studies, with minors in International Development and Social Innovation and Social Entrepreneurship. I’m also a social media intern in the Office of Study Abroad this year. One of my responsibilities will be to take you along with me as I try to figure out where I’m going to study abroad next year!

One of the main reasons I came to Tulane is because I am so passionate about Spanish and travel. I always knew I wanted to study abroad during my junior year. When I was researching colleges, I was very impressed by how many study abroad programs Tulane offers and by how I am able to use my scholarships and financial aid package to be able to afford spending a whole year living in another country! (And, I will still be able to graduate on time, even with two minors!)

When I first moved to New Orleans and campus, though, I lived like a typical freshman. I joined the Green Club, Outreach Tulane and started the process to become a Green Wave Ambassador. Yes, that is me you see walking backwards all over campus. I also got elected as Vice President of Communications for the Tulane chapter of Food for Thought and Action, a non-profit with a branch here in New Orleans. I was learning about stuff I’d never thought about before, like entrepreneurship and international development organizations. Taking college-level Spanish really challenged me, too, but I still loved it! Study abroad was kind of on my mind, but as a freshman, I was so busy getting used to campus life that I didn’t think about it too much.

After freshman year, I went home over the summer and really had a lot of time to think about what I loved about traveling. I realized how much I loved experiencing new cultures, learning languages and meeting people from all around the world. I was going to tackle planning my study abroad during my sophomore year. Now, I’m back here on campus and starting to really give it all some thought. I know I definitely want to become as fluent as possible in Spanish and I also want to study topics related to my major – Environmental Studies – but in a totally new and different place. It’s been so cool to learn about New Orleans and the different environmental issues we have to deal with down here. So, I think I can gain a totally new perspective by studying the same topics somewhere else, too.

I have a little bit of international experience already, which has only made me more excited about studying abroad. I remember the first time I ever left the country. I went to five different cities in Spain when I was in high school and even took a day trip to Tetouan, Morocco, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site! I also got the chance to visit the Osa Peninsula on the Pacific side of Costa Rica.  One thing I really loved from those experiences that I hope to have again during my junior year abroad is learning about cultures that are totally new to me.

At this point, I don’t need to worry about applications yet – the deadline for studying abroad next fall is still a few months away. So for the next month or so, I’ll be researching my options on the Office of Study Abroad website and going to a bunch of different events to try and get as much information as possible so I can make a decision. Of course, I still have all of my responsibilities on campus and my classes, but I’m excited to learn about all of the places I can go!

Tulane Students Making Global Waves

This Tulane alumna will be featured at the Generation Study Abroad IIE Summit in Washington, DC this October, a conference geared towards IIE’s goal of doubling study abroad by the year 2020. The Institute for International Education is a not-for-profit international education and training organization, focused on providing excellent programs and training opportunities to their diverse selection of participants, sponsors, and donors.

Hannah is a 2012 graduate of Tulane University who studied abroad with CIEE in Legon, Ghana during spring of 2011. Since studying abroad, Hannah has worked with the Rise Up Development Collective in Wli Todzi, Ghana, Single Stop USA in Harlem, New York as a Global Health Corps Fellow, Ubuntu Africa in Cape Town, South Africa, and currently works for the United Nations Foundation in Washington, D.C.

Shifting the Paradigm:

Week of September 19-26, Uptown Campus

All week, the Tulane University Sexual Violence Prevention and Education Coalition is hosting a series of events around the Uptown campus focused on sexual violence and prevention. Starting September 19th, Tulane's Students, Leaders and Faculty will be putting on educational workshops, forums, and even a Drag Queen Bingo night in effort to raise awareness for sexual violence and prevention on campus.

Experiential Learning and Internship Panel:

Friday, September 16, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m., Anna Many Lounge in the Caroline Richardson Building

Hear from fellow students how they navigated applying for internships and grants, and how these experiences have helped them form post-college plans.  NCI staff will also be in attendance to answer questions about NCI grant funding.  This event is presented as part of Fridays at Newcomb, sponsored by the Newcomb College Institute.  For more information, email Lauren Wethers at lwethers@tulane.edu.

Other Events:

The 2016 International Student Travel Video Contest is now open! This is the 11th year we have hosted the contest and this year's grand prize winner will receive $4,000 and their very own blog on our website.

International students, and those students who want to study abroad are welcome to enter (this includes both international students and study abroad students). To enter, students would need to submit a 5 minute video telling us why they want to study abroad, or if they are already studying abroad, a trip they want to take. You can find further details on our official contest page

Happy Start of a New Semester!

For those of you returning to Tulane, welcome back! And to those who have just joined us this year, welcome to an amazing community. The 2016-17 school year has begun, and it has brought with it a lot of ways to get involved in the international scene on campus. This includes communicating with international students, returned study abroad students, attending our events, or reading blogs from students who are currently abroad! Keep on reading to find out more.

We just had our annual Jazz and Jambalaya celebration, welcoming international students as well as returning study abroad students! It was a success, with Dunbar's providing the food and SOUL Brass Band with some amazing music. Check it out at the start of next year!

Any student with a Louisiana ID can go to the World War II Museum for a 50% discount during the month of September!

The U.S. Department of Commerce's National Travel & Tourism Office, a section within the International Trade Administration announced a 37% increase in international visitors to New Orleans and a 36% increase in international visitors to Louisiana.
